After a tooth has been extracted, whether a wisdom tooth or other tooth, you will be provided with full aftercare instructions. The basics of caring for the extraction site include:
Rinsing
Do not rinse the mouth the first day. One the day following your extraction, rinse your mouth with saltwater every three to four hours, and continue for several days. Use one quarter teaspoon of salt mixed in a glass of warm water.
Bleeding
Expect some bleeding, and place gauze pads over the extraction site and bite down, replacing the gauze when needed. The bleeding does not typically last for long.
Swelling
Swelling is common after an extraction and can be reduced with an ice pack (placed within a towel). Apply this to the swollen area for a half hour, then a half hour off, and repeat. The use of an ice pack over the first four or five hours is effective in reducing swelling.
Pain and Discomfort
As the anesthetic wears off, it is normal to feel pain and discomfort. You can limit it by taking non-aspirin medication, such as Tylenol. We will recommend the right type of painkiller and may prescribe a stronger version for the early stages.
